Intel Strives for Balance With Springdale Chipset Going Downtown Today Intel is unleashing it's new Springdale chipset. Officially named the 865PE, this new chipset is designed to become Intel's mainstream product. In addition to Springdale, Intel is also releasing some lower-clocked (and lower cost) Hyper-Threaded Pentium 4 CPUs that support Springdale's 800MHz frontside bus (200MHz actual clock, quad data rate). When we looked at the 875P (aka Canterwood), we noted that it was the bin-sorted cream of the crop of Intel's new dual-channel DDR line, and that the 865PE (Springdale) would soon become Intel's mainstream part. Well that day has finally come.. So what's the difference between the two? The 865PE lacks the 875P's ECC memory support and its "Performance Acceleration Technology" (PAT), which allowed the memory controller to support tighter memory timings. Intel is also shipping a version of the 865, called the 865GE, with the same integrated graphics core that exists in the 845GE chipset. But today we're focusing on the 865PE -- We'll take a look at the 865GE in the future, to see if the dual-channel DDR memory and higher clock rate improves its performance over previous GE part.(Continue Reading)
